How I Became a Children’s Author

Lois Davis at her desk

I’m no longer working at the kitchen table!

The year is 2013. It’s May, and just before what would have been my dad’s birthday. My son and his family moved to Brazil.

It wasn’t a plan to sit around heartbroken. Instead, I began writing letters to my twin grandkids in story form, and what emerged, was a realisation that I could write children’s fiction. It hit me like a bolt out of the blue. I had always had this gift inside me – a gift my lovely dad had left me when he passed so many years before.  It simply needed a spark to light the flame.

Picture the scene. Laptop on the kitchen table, and it was like flood gates opening. The words just poured out of me. One day I wrote for ten hours! I had a passion for it. My characters became real. I was a part of them, and they were a part of me.

I’m driven in the building of empathy in children through their reading to excite and expand their imaginations.

My first book, published in 2014 contained five stories. Two more books followed in 2017 and 2019. And the learning curve was, and continues to be, humongous!

In 2020, work began on a whole new series ~ ‘Mincemeat’s World of Adventures’ with the first in the series, ‘Mincemeat and a Train Called Zayn’ launched in 2022!

It’s fair to say that Mincemeat is my best buddy. I adore him. I love his quirkiness. His love of dancing, sewing, his motorbike, and best of all, baking! He’s kind, empathetic, a great listener, and will always be there for whoever needs his help. He is the kind of friend you’d be blessed to have!

So join me on my journey – we’re going to have a lot of fun!
